2025-07-30T02:21:10.884 Special Weather Statement issued July 30 at 12:20PM ChST by NWS Tiyan GU

At 925 ChST a magnitude 8.7 earhquake occurred at 52.2 North latitude, 160.0 longitude, at a depth of 46 miles. TSUNAMI WAVES HAVE ALREADY BEEN DETECTED by the DART buoys in the northern Pacific. The latest guidance from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center suggests Tsunami waves of 0.3 to 1 meter, or roughly up to 3.3 feet above the tide level are possible for islands throughout Pohnpei and Kosrae States, and the Marshal Islands. POTENTIAL IMPACTS ----------------- * A tsunami is a series of waves. The time between wave crests can vary from 5 minutes to an hour. The hazard may persist for many hours or longer after the initial wave. * Impacts can vary significantly from one section of the coast to the next due to local bathymetry and the shape and elevation of the shoreline. * Impacts can also vary depending upton the state of the tide at the time of maximum tsunami waves. * Persons caught in the water of a tsunami may drown, be crushed by debris in the water, or be swept out to sea. Stay out of the water! * Minor flooding could occur on beaches and in harbor areas. * Strong and unusual ocean currents will be possible in harbors, bays, and other near-shore waters. TIMING (all times in local time) -------------------------------- Pohnpei: 4:42 PM Kosrae: 4:43 PM Kwajalein: 5:21 PM Majuro: 5:43 PM Listen for updates on watches, advisories, or warnings from your local Weather Service Offices and Emergency Management Offices. Updated texts and threat messages can be found at tsunami.gov
